New Orleans Saxophonist Orlando Gilbert Announces Groundbreaking Father-Son Album with John "Prince" Gilbert
As a New Orleans saxophonist and composer, I'm excited to announce that my father and I are working on a groundbreaking father-son album. My father, John "Prince" Gilbert, is a genre-defining saxophonist known for his seminal work in legendary bands like the Rebirth Brass Band, the Hot 8 Brass Band, and many more. Together, we're bringing our talents and passion for New Orleans music to create something truly special.
Growing up, I was surrounded by my father's music and it's been a privilege to be able to learn from him and the other master musicians in New Orleans. He's a legend in the city and his contributions have helped shape the trajectory of New Orleans music for the last forty years. My father's influence extends beyond New Orleans and I found out that people were studying his compositions across the Atlantic in London. However, even though his music was being studied, his name wasn't well-known. That's why we've decided to put together an album to give my father the credit he deserves and to share his talent with the world.
I had the opportunity to study with some of the best musicians in New Orleans like Kent Jordan, Alonzo Bowens, and Dwayne Paulin. I also had the privilege to study with the faculty at NOCCA and Donald Harrison Jr. and play with my father and the Treme Brass Band every Tuesday night at the DBA bar on Frenchmen. I continued to study with great musicians at Berklee College of Music and got to tour with the great Delfeayo Marsalis. Now, after graduating from Berklee, I'm excited to share my own talent and music with the world.
Our vision for this album is to record, release, and promote a full-length father-son album featuring our original compositions. We want to highlight the core essence of New Orleans music and culture: family, community, expansion on tradition, and the passing of the torch from one generation to the next. This album is dedicated to our love for each other and celebrates the music and culture that has brought us so close together. We plan on recording this album with some of New Orleans' best musicians over the course of 2021 and plan on releasing the album and merchandise in late 2021/early 2022.
But we need your help to make this album a reality. Your donations will go towards recording costs, payment of the album's personnel, album art, and promotion. You'll be able to play an essential part in the making of this album and know that you made this beautiful project possible.
Thank you for your support, and we can't wait for you to hear our music!
